PROFIBUS UK celebrates 20 years since formation

PI Chairman Karsten Schneider will focus on two major topics – looking at where the PI community stands today from an organizational perspective and offering his vision of the future for Profibus/Profinet technology.

He will be looking at new technology developments too.  One important topic will be the FDI technology as product release comes close. He will be talking about what can be gained from this protocol-independent technology and explaining how it fits in with Profibus/Profinet, providing harmonization of configuration management and making it possible to more easily manage devices from a range of vendors and DCS suppliers in a harmonized manner.

PROFIBUS UK celebrates 20 years since formation

The importance of PROFIBUS & PROFINET to manufacturing and infra-structure.

Brian Holliday, Divisional Director, Industry Automation, Siemens plc returns to address this year’s conference with a brief historical perspective of PROFIBUS & PROFINET and their early applications through to the current day.

He will reflect on the importance of industrial communication and standardization, arguing their central relevance to the technology challenges being tackled in manufacturing and infra-structure today.

As a regular contributor to media, our key institutions and government on manufacturing, Brian will share his insights into current initiatives aimed at improving the engineering skills base and promoting the use of autonomous and networked controls systems.

In this case study Mark O’Halloran of BAE Systems will discuss how PROFIBUS

has been applied in order to meet safety targets while reducing ownership costs of vessels.

Abstract:

In today’s modern world, the constraints of reduced manning and increased awareness of safety and achieving those targets within a marine environment has driven the  demand for Control & Instrumentation systems with increased complexity,  balanced by usability and cost of ownership.  This has led many Marine system suppliers to look to fieldbuses – especially PROFIBUS – to give flexibility in design and reduce the cost of production and maintenance.

This presentation will cover BAE Systems’ approach to utilising distributed control and distributed remote I/O, linked by PROFIBUS technology.  The speaker will also cover how PROFIBUS has been applied in order to meet safety targets and how it has given the suppleness to reduce ownership costs of vessels.

David Bray, Chairman of United Utilities Fieldbus Steering Group

will begin with a brief overview of United Utilities and its usage of Profibus networks and devices. It will briefly explain that WIMES is large suite of specifications jointly developed by a group of water industry companies and the range of plant and processes that the specs cover. The presentation will go on to highlight the relevance of WIMES 3.02 and 3.02A Specifications to Profibus network design and installation. It will further explain that WIMES is referenced by and is subject to and may be modified by the particular water company’s ‘in house’ specifications for Profibus networks.

Note that the presentation will only apply to copper based Profibus networks.

Points to be addressed

  • A brief introduction to lightning phenomena.
  • What Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) are and how they operate.
  • Highlight and explain where and why they should be used on copper based Profibus networks.
  • Provide comment on what may happen to devices on the Profibus network if SPDs aren’t used
  • Show and comment on actual examples of Profibus SPD site applications, both the good and not so good.

Steffen Ochsenreither of Endress+Hauser Process Solutions explains

PI-UK-20th-Anniversary-LOGO 4since the beginning of digital communication technology, there was always a need for devices performing the same tasks to behave equally – even if they have been manufactured by different vendors or have been bought at different times.

This request is all among in our daily life: if we buy a cell phone, we want to perform a basic task: making calls. Regardless of which cell phone we buy, we expect them to work together and equally.

PI answered this request in introducing the different PROFILES to the technology. Up to now, there are more than 20 different PROFILES available.

The Presentation will cover the reason for PROFILES and applications in which this PROFILES can really play their strengths. A special focus will be on the latest version of the PA PROFILE, as this marks a major step for the technology in the process automation.

Peter Thomas of Control Specialists explains more about Profinet Frame Analysis with WireShark

PROFIBUS UK celebrates 20 years since formation

PROFIBUS UK’s 20th Anniversary

in a workshop that will enable delegates to take the opportunity to gain a better understanding of Profinet by using WireShark to analyse the Profinet Frames between a PLC and a Remote IO device. See the actual PLC commands being transmitted over the Ethernet and observe the response of the system to various errors.
