Industry 4.0 Trends

Karsten Schneider, Chairman of PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI), views the figures from the most recent assessment as clear confirmation of users’ great trust in PI technologies: “Especially against the background of the trends that have become visible through Industry 4.0, the figures demonstrate impressively that the PI technologies have developed in the right direction. This is motivation for us to continue the work with the same intensity and advance it even further to meet the requirements from the Industry 4.0 domain. The I40@PI working group founded a year and a half ago has picked up speed. The fundamental requirements stand, and the solutions are taking form in coordination with end users.”

The annual determination of the installed base of the portfolio of PI (PROFIBUS & PROFINET International) show a significant growth in market acceptance. The numbers for PROFINET and PROFIsafe are particularly strong. IO-Link is also exhibiting a strongly accelerated growth. The somewhat leveling-off growth of PROFIBUS and simultaneous surge of PROFINET is evidence that Ethernet-based communication is starting to replace conventional fieldbus technology in production automation. In contrast, PROFIBUS is trending strongly in process automation markets.

Three million PROFINET devices were brought into the market in 2015. The total number at the end of 2015 was 12.8 million devices, which represents a 30% increase in the installed base over the previous year. In the case of PROFIsafe, 1.3 million nodes were brought into the market in 2015, increasing the installed base by more than 30% to a total of 5.5 million PROFIsafe nodes. IO-Link experienced the greatest increase this year with 63% growth. The total number of installed IO-Link devices is now more than 3.6 million. A total of 2.8 million PROFIBUS devices were brought into the market in 2015.

Karsten-Schneider2Karsten Schneider, Chairman of PI, views the latest accounting of node counts very positively. “For the first time in the history of PROFINET, its numbers exceed those for PROFIBUS. This demonstrates the positive trend for the PI technologies, not least because Industrie 4.0 means that the future belongs to Ethernet systems. With its total number of well over 50 million, PROFIBUS is the absolute world market leader. Beating a world market leader is an art. And the fact that this was done – for the first time over this past year – by PROFIBUS’s in-house competitor PROFINET is an unmistakable sign that the future belongs to our technologies.” “Another sign of the strength of our communication technologies is the rapid growth of PROFIBUS in process automation,” said Schneider. In 2015, 900,000 devices were installed in this realm. The total number now exceeds 10 million devices. This accomplishment represents another milestone.

“Our community has worked hard for success in the past, and the challenges of Industrie 4.0 will continue to propel us. PI will confront upcoming future challenges in order to ensure long-term success.”

New market data released.

The returned figures show that in 2015 the trend of strong growth for PROFINET and PROFIsafe continued while PROFIBUS maintained steady growth. This year for the first time, PI has included IO-Link in the study, which also shows strong growth to around 3.6 million by the end of 2015.

There were 2.8 million new PROFIBUS nodes in the market in 2015. This increased the number of installed PROFIBUS devices to over 53.7 million. Of these, nearly 10 million are incorporated in process automation plants. With a growth rate of newly added nodes of over 33%, the number of PROFINET devices installed now stands at over 12.8 million. Particularly pleasing was the strong growth rate of PROFIsafe of 32%, bringing the total number of installed devices now to 5.4 million.

The trend of strong growth shared by PROFINET and PROFIsafe is not a coincidence. PROFINET is well established in the market and is currently playing a leading role in many industry sectors, such as the automotive industry. Many users are also taking advantage of the switch to Ethernet-based communication in order to implement functional safety via a bus system. That is why a disproportionately high number of PROFINET devices delivered today also include PROFIsafe functionality. Users are also benefiting from the fact that existing PROFIsafe installations with PROFIBUS can continue to be used. PROFIsafe operates independent of the fieldbus and can be used across network boundaries. The future-proof nature of PROFIsafe and its unrivaled technical capabilities and features make it the undisputed market leader among fail-safe bus systems.

Press information – Cost-effective solution for PROFINET with IRT

PROFINET - the world's best selling industrial Ethernet standard

KW-Software is introducing a cost-effective PROFINET solution based on a Standard Ethernet Controller that includes isochronous real-time communication (IRT). This is very good news for PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI), the international trade association behind PROFINET, who view this as a major step for the further growth of PROFINET. Up until now, only defined ASICs or FPGAs provided this degree of accuracy and precision. Now users can receive the same performance with a standard Ethernet component.

“The market launch of the PROFINET solution on a Standard Ethernet Controller such as the one from Intel is an important step towards high-performance solutions,” affirmed Karsten Schneider, Chairman of PI. “When technology suppliers offer easy-to-integrate solutions in the form of ASICs, network controllers, or FPGAs, device manufacturers can use these in turn to offer new solutions for customer requirements. KW Software’s solution rounds out the technology portfolio. It has always been possible to integrate PROFINET with RT communication on standard Ethernet controllers. From now this is also possible for IRT. This means that device manufacturers now have scalable and suitable options for integrating PROFINET in their devices and controllers. This also demonstrates the openness and market acceptance of PROFINET.”

“For users, it means there is now a very broad palette of controllers and devices to choose from.”

PROFINET is the leading Industrial Ethernet Standard for all industries. Whether the application involves factory automation, process automation or drives with or without functional safety, PROFINET is the first choice across the board. PROFINET is supported by most vendors world-wide and hundreds of devices are available. PI welcomes the solution with a Standard Ethernet Controller from Intel as an easy way to implement PROFINET Controllers and expects further products to emerge as a result – especially for PC based platforms.
