A practical session that allows attendees to get hands-on with real devices on a real network.

Featuring a DP+PA network consisting of two DP segments and a PA segment with  monitoring devices from several leading manufacturers including Softing, Procentec and Pepperl+Fuchs, the network will also have a wireless switch into which a number of monitoring devices will connect and there will be several laptops with wireless comms spread around the room so that people can interact with the monitors.

The Workshop will start with a general introductory presentation on communication and peripheral faults, fault diagnosis and network monitoring. This will include coverage of permanent network monitoring devices and an explanation of the physical setup so people know what they are doing.

Design and function of a functional earth system in copper-based networksUncovering the impact of incorrectly designed equipotential equalisation systems.

Typically in network installations such as PROFIBUS, a functional earth facility is provided by a direct connection to the protective earth of the installation and is not evaluated separately. Appropriate standards and guidelines such as EN 60204, DIN EN 50310 and VDE 0100-444 describe the goals of a functional earth system yet problems still arise.

Using practical examples, this workshop will uncover the impact of incorrectly designed equipotential equalisation systems and will also demonstrate how to evaluate the level of interference within the potential equalisation system.

Rene studied Electrical Engineering in Berlin. He was a founding director of Indu-Sol, a company that provides solutions to ensure industrial automation systems running fieldbus- and industrial Ethernet technology operate correctly.

Collating and integrating performance information from multiple locations.

The Problem:

Businesses now require performance information from different locations, this must be collated and integrated so the data can be analysed across various PROFINET systems, this can be challenging for hardware connectivity as well as the engineering.

Current State of the Art

Current solutions for such tasks are often based on VPN connections and / or parent  IT systems which provide this data. This brings many disadvantages:

  • Very time-consuming
  • Difficult to manage
  • Highconfiguration effort
  • Highcost of the hardware

The Solution

Bring the PROFINET to the cloud. This combination fundamentally simplifies remote control tasks from proven standard automation and the latest information technology.

Network devices and also features an industrial PROFINET network can be shifted to the cloud. This results in a multitude of new possibilities for automation solutions based on PROFINET, for example compute-intensive functions are transferred to intelligent central processing units by information from cloud services integrated into the application.

The way forward for HART users.

Walter Stoops speaks about HART at PROFIBUS ConferenceHART communication has been around since the early 1980’s. Its vast presence in the process installations shows that the technology is still fulfilling the need of most applications and requirements of their users. Because of its wide spread over all sorts of industries it feels odd to leave this technology behind, especially for those who have been working with it for so long. Let’s see how disclosure of the field instrumentation can work for us in various situations.

Project planning

If you are starting from scratch it is easy to implement new technology. Training for the maintenance department is absolutely required from the beginning, as is their involvement in the commissioning to make this successful.

If control systems are replaced then another opportunity presents itself namely, adding new technology whilst existing field instrument remains in place. By adding e.g. remote IO systems one can benefit from the features of fieldbus technology, but also build on the familiarity with the existing HART communication.

On top of that manufacturers provide converters for HART instrumentation to be connected to PROFIBUS DP as well as PROFIBUS PA directly, allowing to multidrop HART instruments from 4 to 15 instruments per channel depending on the application.

Commissioning

When starting up the first thing we would like to see is whether all instruments are properly connected to the system. With fieldbus we know where we stand by generating a ‘Live list’ of the installation. At a glance one can see what is failing and fix right away before proceeding. Once everything is ‘Live’, setting parameters or adjusting the configuration is easily done from behind your computer, instead of going into the field every time. Even HART communication can run over the fieldbus cables via our remote I/O system or HART/PROFIBUS converter.

Maintenance

How much time is spent traveling the plant from the control room or workshop to the field to investigate an alleged problem with an instrument depends on how big the plant is. It is difficult to generalize the costs involved for maintenance, but there is a difference between going into the field with your handheld and your tool bag, cycling for 10 min, climbing to the 3rd floor on a rainy afternoon, or investigating the problem via your Maintenance station located in e.g. the Control Room, while sipping coffee.

In short, whatever you are planning there will always be a time to think of HART communication in combination with PROFIBUS DP or PA. How this will suit your interest best depends on the time spend investigating the possibilities. There is no need to leave old technology behind and just focus on new ones. The outlook is without a doubt Industry 4.0 and/or Industrial Internet of Things, but we should not waste our legacy.

Essential quality criteria for planning and validation of PROFINET networks

Xaver Schmidt will be at the UK PROFINET ConferenceFor PROFINET devices the quality criteria that are checked within the scope of the device certification are described in published specifications, standards and test specifications. Interoperability is protected by both the specification and the test procedures in the cooperation of the devices. From practical experience in the realization of network arrangements it appears that beside the device qualities also the planning quality and the quality of the validation of a whole arrangement can have an influence on the functionality.

In the task force CB / PG3 “Installation Guidelines” the suitable planning directives and introduction directives are now integrated into the quality criteria for the planning and validation of the PROFINET networks. The methods, measuring procedures and also the background will be fully explained.

Future trends and their impact on the networks of the future.

PROFINET is widely accepted and well proven in plant engineering.

Xaver Schmidt reveals all about PROFINETThis is because a lot of PROFINET functions were defined in close collaboration with customers and are used now in many applications. But also in the mechanical engineering the modular and adaptable architecture of PROFINET together with its comprehensive function set allows innovative and cost-saving machine automation.

The advantages of PROFINET pay off in all phases of a machine’s cycle – from the planning of initial start-up and operation up through to service and maintenance. PROFINET offers automatic adaptable address assignment on account of the topology for standard machines, rapid initial start-up with easy tools and defined interfaces for addressing, interoperability of devices thanks to certification, excellent diagnosis of the devices and the network as well as high performance and precision.

PROFINET offers built-in TCP/IP communication, which is independent from special HW- or SW- modules in the devices or controllers. So communication between the overlaid production line control and the devices is easily possible; or an adaptation of the machine by a new parameterization or controlling by vision systems.
