PROFIBUS Training

PROFIBUS UK celebrates 20 years since formation

PI Chairman Karsten Schneider will focus on two major topics – looking at where the PI community stands today from an organizational perspective and offering his vision of the future for Profibus/Profinet technology.

He will be looking at new technology developments too.  One important topic will be the FDI technology as product release comes close. He will be talking about what can be gained from this protocol-independent technology and explaining how it fits in with Profibus/Profinet, providing harmonization of configuration management and making it possible to more easily manage devices from a range of vendors and DCS suppliers in a harmonized manner.

PROFIBUS UK celebrates 20 years since formation

The importance of PROFIBUS & PROFINET to manufacturing and infra-structure.

Brian Holliday, Divisional Director, Industry Automation, Siemens plc returns to address this year’s conference with a brief historical perspective of PROFIBUS & PROFINET and their early applications through to the current day.

He will reflect on the importance of industrial communication and standardization, arguing their central relevance to the technology challenges being tackled in manufacturing and infra-structure today.

As a regular contributor to media, our key institutions and government on manufacturing, Brian will share his insights into current initiatives aimed at improving the engineering skills base and promoting the use of autonomous and networked controls systems.

Steffen Ochsenreither of Endress+Hauser Process Solutions explains

PI-UK-20th-Anniversary-LOGO 4since the beginning of digital communication technology, there was always a need for devices performing the same tasks to behave equally – even if they have been manufactured by different vendors or have been bought at different times.

This request is all among in our daily life: if we buy a cell phone, we want to perform a basic task: making calls. Regardless of which cell phone we buy, we expect them to work together and equally.

PI answered this request in introducing the different PROFILES to the technology. Up to now, there are more than 20 different PROFILES available.

The Presentation will cover the reason for PROFILES and applications in which this PROFILES can really play their strengths. A special focus will be on the latest version of the PA PROFILE, as this marks a major step for the technology in the process automation.

James Powell of Siemens Canada explains

In this presentation we will be discussing an application we did with one of our customers in the northern USA on a series of small-scale oil and gas applications. This was a hazardous application that used state-of-the-art fracking techniques to remove oil from the ground and store it in a small tank farm.

The customers first used Multi-drop HART to get the level of the tanks from a SITRANS LR250. At first this worked fine, but ended up having a number of problems. To solve these problems, we had them switch to Profibus PA using multi-vendor automation equipment. This ended up working very well. Through this application, we saw how much the market has changed in connection to Profibus and how Profibus technology is not just for large projects anymore!

The Workshops will follow a new format of multi-vendor collaboration led by experts

Hands-on workshops at the PROFIBUS Conference

Hands-on Workshops

To be presented at the Stratford Manor Hotel on 26th June, the PROFIBUS Group’s 20th Anniversary Conference and Exhibition will feature a highly informative series of hands-on workshops covering PROFIBUS and PROFINET system design, device configuration and commissioning. They will demonstrate the use of popular tools and techniques for health checking and trouble shooting. A variety of products will be connected and configured into demonstration PROFIBUS and PROFINET systems in front of the audience, much like the “plugfest” concept seen in Germany.

Here’s the current line up:

  • PROFIBUS device configuration and PLUGFEST.  An opportunity to bring  along your PROFIBUS device and incorporate it into a working system – Andy Verwer, VTC
  • PROFIBUS Health Monitoring – Dennis van Booma, Procentec and Dale Fittes,  Hitex
  • PROFINET Configuration and PLUGFEST.  An opportunity to bring along your PROFINET device and incorporate it into a working system – Manjit Ojla & Andy Williams,  Siemens
  • Ethernet and PROFINET Frame Analysis. Practical hands-on use WireShark to look at Ethernet and PROFINET frames – Peter Thomas, Control Specialists and Peter Jüngling, Softing
  • PA Device set up and Commissioning using FDT/DTM and EDDL based tools – Andy Smith, E+H and Mark McCormick, Siemens Process Control
  • PROFINET permanent/static monitoring  – Peter Jüngling, Softing and Peter Brown, Siemens

Don’t miss it!

Press Information – PROFIBUS UK Conference Programme

The PROFIBUS Group, the UK’s leading source of information and support for PROFIBUS and PROFINET users has announced preliminary details of the conference programme to be presented at its 20th Anniversary event on 26th June at the Stratford Manor Hotel, Warwickshire.

The conference will open with a State of The (Industrial) Nation address from Brian Holliday, one of the founding fathers of The UK’s PROFIBUS Group, addressing factors such as government, manufacturing, industrial infra-structure and skills, and why investment and standards such as PROFIBUS & PROFINET remain key to growth and prosperity.

PI Chairman Karsten Schneider will then present the keynote speech, bringing important news of updates on the technology including PROFINET for Process industry applications, performance achievements and the latest developments on such key areas as PROFIenergy, the organisation’s innovative solution for massive energy-savings during production idle times.

Case Studies

James Powell, author of “Catching the Process Fieldbus” and a regular presenter at previous conferences will present a case study of a customer who has switched from Ex HART to IS PROFIBUS PA utilizing a multi-vendor solution, showing that PROFIBUS PA is not just for large sites and revealing the economics of using PA and IS instead of Ex construction.

Other practical presentations and case studies will be delivered by David Bray of United Utilities on the subject of lightning protection while an expert from BAE Systems submarine division will address key issues of safety and security in systems design and implementation.

Master Classes and Workshops

There will be a number of Master Classes and Workshops, covering matters such as the new Certified PROFIBUS System Designer course. Delivered by the Group’s Technical Officer, Andy Verwer, this presentation shows the need for such certified training and outlines the course content.

Peter Thomas of Control Specialists will discuss how the use of PROFINET can take you into the realms of the IT world, which is very different from the one in which control engineers usually operate in. He will show how WireShark can be used as a tool for base lining the operation of your PROFINET network and will initially look at normal Internet traffic frames such as ping and web site calls to gain a better understanding of how it can be of benefit.

Other workshops will be presented covering tools and techniques for health checking and trouble shooting, PROFIBUS device configuration and device commissioning using FDT/DTM and EDDL based tools.
