20th Anniversary

A Great Success for PROFIBUS and PROFINET

PROFIBUS UK's 20th Anniversary Conference was a great success
when nearly 100 people gathered together at a conference held at the Stratford Manor Hotel, Warwickshire on 25 and 26 June 2013. Presented by The PROFIBUS Group, the event was organised as a celebration of the group’s 20th Anniversary. The programme of formal papers and hands-on workshops was presented by experts from the UK, Europe and Canada.

Delegates were very impressed with the standard and quality of the event as the following comments show:

“Great to see the conference back. Very useful opportunity to talk to vendors and experts about developments and changes in PROFIBUS/PROFINET technologies. ” – Nick Wood, LaFarge Tarmac

“Very enlightening – many things discussed which I was totally unaware of  (Government initiatives etc.)  Excellent day – well worth taking the time out to visit.” – Steve Bolton, Gassco

“Very good, very interesting & educational.” – M. Mead, Gassco

“As well as being a celebration of PI’s 20 years this event provided a concentrated dose of technology updates which no-one involved in automation should miss.” – Dale Fittes, Hitex

“Worthwhile visit.” – Ian McCartney, iTech

“Very well organised event. Very informative day for present and future developments with PROFIBUS and PROFINET technologies.  Excellent Workshops for hands-on opportunities.  Lots of exhibitors to talk to. Thanks to all the contributors.” – Kevin Shaw, Siemens

A new 4-channel digital input module integrates functional safety and intrinsic safety

Wago 08c01803Exi PROFIsafeinto one single I/O module of the WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM 750 that will be shown at the PROFIBUS UK Conference in June.

Just 24 mm wide but with guaranteed safety: The 750-663 for PROFIsafe applications is used when safety of personnel is called for in hazardous Zones 0 and 1.

This 4-channel digital module is installed in the WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM 750 together with the classic automation components in Zone 2. The four intrinsically safe inputs with functional safety can be used for safety functions up to “SIL 3” and “Cat. 4 PLe.” Despite the combined features, the requirements for users during commissioning remain the same: The safety interface for the new 4-channel digital input module is identical to that for a pure safety I/O module from WAGO.

The input data for the 750-663, together with the other process data, is transferred using PROFIsafe protocols V1 and V2 on one fieldbus line. Inputs are continually monitored for cross circuits and voltage supply from separate sources. Different settings can be made in the I/O module using the WAGO-I/O-CHECK configuration software, such as the operating mode, activating and de-activating of test pulses and discrepancy and filter times. Fieldbus technology for hazardous areas is particularly vital to both process (grain/coal mills, bio-gas/cement plants) and power industries (gas/oil production facilities).

The WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM 750

Approved for a wide variety of applications: with its fieldbus-independent design that features finely modular components, the WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM 750 readily meets all the requirements made of distributed fieldbus systems. The system’s modularity is also reflected in its support of numerous fieldbus systems. Depending on the application, it is possible to choose between fieldbus couplers and controllers (PLC) for different protocols. With 400+ digital, analog and specialty I/O modules, the WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM 750 offers scalable performance and high integration density with an unbeatable price/performance ratio.

BEKA’s extensive range has ATEX, IECEx, FM and cFM certification

BEKA's eight variable PROFIBUS PA indicators and displays

BEKA’s PROFIBUS PA indicators and displays

permitting installation in most gas or dust hazardous areas. Commonly used in many industries world-wide, these bus-powered panel or field mounted single- and eight-variable indicators and display devices show operators process values in hazardous or non-hazardous areas.

The versatile PROFIBUS PA displays have eleven selectable standard screen formats containing one, two, three, four or eight process variables, some with bargraphs, together with units of measurement and descriptions. Up to eight fieldbus variables may be viewed simultaneously on a single display screen. Front panel push buttons allow the operator to scroll between screens.

Cost effective PROFIBUS PA indicators display up to eight fieldbus process variables on a bold five digit display and a 31 segment analogue bargraph. If required, the indicator address may be entered via the front panel push buttons eliminating the need for a PROFIBUS configurator.

As with all BEKA products, these displays and indicators are supplied calibrated to customer requirements and have a three year guarantee. For customers wishing to evaluate a Profibus model, BEKA operate a free three month sale or return evaluation service.

Exhibition Update from HMS – new Chip, Brick, Module (CMB) concept

HMS CompactCom30HMS will be showing its new Chip, Brick, Module (CMB) concept demonstrating how easy it is to connect devices onto PROFIBUS/PROFINET networks.

Using its Anybus CompactComm concept which is now available either as a chip solution, HMS provides network connectivity on a single chip for integration into the user’s PCB design; a brick solution aimed at users who have limited space or want to add their own choice of network connectors; or a complete, interchangeable communication module – all of these solutions enable PROFIBUS devices to connect easily to other open networks.

Two PROFINET IO Fieldbus Couplers featuring PROFIenergy and PROFIsafe

Wago 08c01886PROFINET-375will make their UK public debut at the PROFIBUS UK Conference in June. Part of the WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM 750 the new 750-375 and 750-377 PROFINET IO Fieldbus Couplers support the latest PROFINET Standard V2.3.

Both models are equipped with an integrated 2-port switch, enabling line topology without extra components. Additionally, both couplers support LLDP protocol, allowing for device replacement without programming. Besides standard PROFINET features, such as topology detection and comprehensive diagnostics, both fieldbus couplers provide additional functions.

Key features include: PROFIenergy profile for efficient energy management, Ipar server functionality and Tool Calling Interface (TCI). Standard communication via PROFIsafe protocol (Safety Integrated) allows both 750-375 and 750-377 couplers to be used in safety-related applications.

The 750-375 PROFINET IO advanced Fieldbus Coupler, which carries its own supply module, creates local process images for maximum two I/O controllers and one I/O supervisor. The coupler features an integrated Web server (e.g., for advanced diagnostic capabilities) and supports “Shared Device,” allowing connected I/O modules to be divided into functional units. It also permits easy separation between standard and safety functions within in a node. The 750-377 PROFINET IO advanced ECO Fieldbus Coupler, which is not equipped with a supply module, creates local process images for both I/O controller and supervisor.

Featuring finely modular components, the WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM meets all the requirements for distributed fieldbus systems. Softing will be demonstrating stationary network diagnostics

Softing_BC-502with the PROFIBUS monitor BC-502-PB at the PROFIBUS UK 20th Anniversary conference.

“A lot has to happen until the bus fails and the system is standing still!” The practice shows that PROFIBUS is a rugged fieldbus. Malfunctions that happen just the same, mostly can be traced back to the bus physics. Usually, the first sign of a deterioration in bus quality go unnoticed by the “normal” bus participants. Aging, corrosion, damaged or worn cables are typical examples of the underlying causes.

To forestall a costly system failure with adequate measures, it is important to recognize the early warning signals and indicate the actual maintenance requirements: Softing’s stationary PROFIBUS Monitor BC-502-PB “understands” the bus communication and detects problems before the network failure. The tool’s open functionality allows use across all controller and PROFIBUS device types. Moreover, one PROFIBUS Monitor per bus line is all that is needed – no matter how many physical segments are to be monitored.
